Is there a way to look up the feature IDs from Natural Earth? I also contribute to Wikidata and it would seem very good to connect both databases by saving the ID on Wikidata. That would allow controlling and sharing of data between the two databases.

Wikidata has an already huge community and is providing free data to the world. We are also connected with OSM and many other databases.

In case you don’t know what I am talking about here is a link to Budapest on Wikidata (Note that you can switch the language in the upper right corner)

    http://tools.wmflabs.org/reasonator/?&q=1781

    http://tools.wmflabs.org/reasonator/?q=Q1781&lang=hu

If you look at the right hand side, there is a list of identifiers (also OSM). It would be nice if natural earth could also be in that list. But in order to do that we need a way of accessing those IDs.

Just to explain a little more:

Our item for Budapest has the code (primary key, identifier)

    “Q1781”

We connect to Open Street Map by saving the feature ID of Budapest used by OSM:

    “37244”

Most importantly this allows us to say these two identifiers stand for the same concept.

Because each item on Wikidata has a label and short description in more than 250 languages this allow us to dishinguish concepts independent of language.

It would be really fun to connect to this database because people could for example query: “I need free datasets that contain information about Budpest” and then Wikidata would show links to datasets on this website that contain that information.
