I am a novice at making maps maps and cartography. Can anyone recommend an easy to use Open Source GIS software package that I can use to view and manipulate Natural Earth data files? I am primarily interested in downloading the vector data files from Natural Earth using a GIS software package to correctly project the data onto a map and then editing my final map in Illustrator.

I do not have access to ARC GIS. I have looked at Quantum GIS and wanted to know if anyone has other suggestions?

    Thanks

See here for a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GIS_software#Desktop_GIS

In my opinion Quantum GIS is a good starting point for GIS beginners.
