    I have created a nice simple to use software for uploading Natural Earth shape files directly into SQL Server 2012 (and yes it is free under GPL). The source and the binaries are located at http://www.dupuis.me/node/32. This tool should be able to work with any ESRI shape files.

    I also include the source of http://natearth.dupuis.me/, a small (but quite complex) web site for browsing the different countries.
