Hi, I’m new here and new to GIS, so I hope I won’t offend anyone with naive questions. I’ve downloaded several of the Natural Earth data sets for creating maps of the western US. I’ve noticed that the resolution of the NE1 shaded relief map is not as high as what is available at http://www.shadedrelief.com/natural/index.html. The high resolution tiffs available there are not as well aligned with the vector data sets at Natural Earth, however. So this is really a two part question.

    1. Is there a higher resolution file available at Natural Earth, which I simply failed to find? (I have NE1_HR_LC_SR.tif)

    2. Is there a tutorial someone could point me to for learning how to modify raster and vector layers in QGIS or GRASS to make them align based on a set of selected common points?

    Thanks,

    Gregory

    Gregory,

You have the highest resolution version of Natural Earth 1 that is on the Natural Earth Data website and which registers well with the vector drainage and coastline data. The higher resolution version of Natural Earth 1 on my other website does not register well with vectors, mostly because the vectors derive from old WDB2 sources, which are a bit suspect in terms of spatial accuracy, and were further tweaked to fit snugly with the lower resolution Natural Earth rasters. So the upshot is that higher resolution raster data will fit pretty well other more accurate vectors but not the vectors on our site.

I do not have experience with QGIS or GRASS and can’t offer you any advice.

    Tom,

I just got back to having internet access and read your response from a couple weeks ago. Thanks for the tip. I’ll try using hydrology layers from elsewhere and see how they line up with the higher resolution raster from your other web site.

    Cheers,

    Gregory
